JUST NOW: Mistakes in the negotiations by Klay Thompson and the Warriors resulted in the termination of his 13-year tenure…..
Thompson felt as if he should have been compensated with a four-year deal similar to Draymond Green’s and Andrew Wiggins’, especially since neither has lived up to their contracts.”
Even after two seasons of being sidelined by potentially career-ending injuries, Thompson thought he was still the same athlete. He was looking for a four-year deal akin to what his teammates Andrew Wiggins and Raymond Green had recently agreed to.
But the Warriors didn’t agree with Thompson’s evaluation of himself, and they first made him an offer for a $48 million, two-year contract. In terms of length and money, Thompson was not satisfied with this offer.
Washburn pointed out that the unsuccessful negotiations were the result of both parties’ faults. Despite his recent history of injuries and performance deterioration, Thompson insisted on a four-year contract, which conflicted with the Warriors’ more conservative approach. Thompson expressed his wish for a new beginning outside of the Bay Area when he begged Stephen Curry not to get involved because the situation had gotten so bad.
Tensions between Thompson and the Warriors’ ownership were evident during the previous season. Thompson, who finished the third-worst scoring season of his career with an average of 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, was also criticised for his play. His shooting percentages of 38.7% from outside the arc and 43.2% from the field further hampered his case for a lucrative, long-term contract.
Thompson’s career has taken a new turn with his transfer to the Mavericks. During his first press conference, Thompson talked enthusiastically about his new beginning in Dallas. “It feels like such a new beginning to come here. I’m anxious to go out there and even work out after this press conference and get shots up because I feel like I’m just desired again and I bring great value,” Thompson added. While acknowledging the challenges of the previous year, he was excited to embrace his new club and city.
One of the NBA’s most explosive duos, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, will team up with Thompson in Dallas. The Mavericks are hoping that Thompson’s skill and experience would help them win more games. They recently made their first trip to the NBA Finals since winning the 2011 championship.
