Omari Hutchinson’s season-long loan at Portman Road has impressed Ipswich Town, and contingent on one important element, they may seal a permanent deal for the Chelsea young player.
The East Anglian team had been wallowing in League One for a number of years, uncomfortable near the bottom half of the standings, when Kieran McKenna took over the Tractor Boys two and a half seasons ago.
The board has previously appointed seasoned managers with a track record of getting promoted—people like Paul Cook and Mick McCarthy. Having never led a first-team squad during his coaching career, McKenna was the antithesis of these two guys.
The board took a huge chance when they appointed McKenna, but it has turned out to be a masterclass. The Northern Irishman secured promotion in his first full season at Portman Road by placing second in England’s third division, narrowly missing out on the championship by three points.
Nevertheless, despite all chances, Ipswich Town was able to duplicate this achievement in the 2023–24 season, falling only one point short of Leicester City in the end to make their first-ever Premier League comeback in 22 years.
With a few loan players, the 37-year-old coach was able to assemble a team that could compete for promotion. Omari Hutchinson, Jeremy Sarmiento, and Kieffer Moore were among the players who entered and gave outstanding performances to help lead the team back to the top division.
The last was very noteworthy. Hutchinson, 21, made 50 appearances for the Tractor Boys this season, tallying six assists and 11 goals. However, with his time there now up, he will be returning to Stamford Bridge.
McKenna recently said, “Omari,” in response to a question about what the perfect gift would be in front of his 38th birthday next week.
According to a report from The Athletic, Ipswich does have the opportunity to sign Hutchinson permanently this summer. However, for a deal involving the playmaker to be completed, McKenna must continue in his role as head coach.
Author’s Perspective
Hutchinson is a terrific athlete who is unquestionably talented enough to compete in the Premier League. Mauricio Pochettino will have a difficult time integrating him into the starting lineup for Chelsea next season because of the team’s deep bench. This summer, the Cobham Academy product might relocate permanently.
But a comeback to Ipswich Town will only occur if McKenna stays in charge and isn’t lured off in the upcoming months by specific employment offers. If they want to stay in the top division, he will need to continue inspiring the players and supporters like he has done thus far.
