Lexi Thompson Shares How US Solheim Cup Team Embodies Patriotism

US Solheim Cup player Lexi Thompson has revealed how the team event sparks a deep sense of patriotism among its players. As she prepares for the upcoming edition of the biennial tournament, scheduled for next week, Thompson reflected on the team spirit and camaraderie that make the event special.

Thompson, who will be making her seventh appearance in the tournament, spoke about the patriotic flair of her teammates, particularly Morgan Pressel and Paula Creamer, who have shown their pride by sporting face tattoos. “Morgan and Paula are probably the most patriotic players I’ve played with, wearing face tattoos, scrunchies, and all that. But we all get super into it in our own ways. Some are a bit more girly, some aren’t, but we all love representing our country every time we tee it up,” Thompson shared via the Solheim Cup X account.

Selected as the captain’s pick for the 2024 Solheim Cup, Thompson first debuted in the tournament in 2013 and has been a mainstay ever since. She was part of the victorious USA teams in 2015 and 2017. However, this edition could be her last, as the 29-year-old golfer announced her retirement from professional golf earlier this year.

In May, Thompson took to Instagram to announce her retirement, expressing her gratitude for the journey and the support she received from her family and fans. Reflecting on her career, which began in 2010 and includes 15 professional wins—11 of which came on the LPGA Tour—Thompson said the 2024 season would be her last.

As she looks ahead to life after golf, Thompson shared her plans to focus on personal time, stating, “While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time. I’m excited to enjoy the remainder of the year, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life, with time for family, friends, and my dog, Leo.”
