How much would the Oakland Athletics have to give up to win Mason Miller, even though the Chicago Cubs are among the best teams fighting for him?

Jim Bowden hinted at a potential Chicago price tag in his most recent article for The Athletic, and it’s hefty.

There’s a good reason why the trade talks around the pitcher have gotten so heated.

Miller has become the bullpen’s most famous name in a short amount of time. The athlete who is favored to win rookie of the year is expected to be in great demand on deadline day due to his outstanding season.

Though he just had his worst game of the season, he has done enough to ensure that it won’t affect his trade position. In 1.2 innings on Thursday, he gave up three earned runs on three hits. Those were the first earned runs he has surrendered since the end of March, when he made his season debut. Not only did he pitch 19 innings without giving up a run, but he also surrendered just four hits in that span.

As of Thursday, the 25-year-old leads the league in xERA, xwOBA, SLG, xSLG, and xBA numbers. When you watch him play, it’s easy to see why he’s been virtually unhittable.

With a fastball velocity of 100.9 mph, he has a distinctive pitching style. Even though his movement is in the top 20 in MLB, he also has a deadly slider.

Due of Miller’s velocity, which seems to be a prescription for arm issues, people could be hesitant to give away a lot of assets. Miller’s greatest drawback is this. He was placed on the 60-day injured list earlier in his career due to an elbow ailment.

Bowden acknowledged that it might not be the wisest course of action to trade for Miller if doing so requires giving up Kevin Alcantara and Owen Caissie, but it might be sufficient to acquire Miller.

Caissie is ranked as the 38th top baseball prospect overall, and it is expected that he will join the major leagues in 2019. The 21-year-old is slashing.289/.419/.430 in AAA ball this season.

Even though Alcanatara, the other 21-year-old, did not have as much luck in AA, she is still quite skilled.

The Cubs might be better off not going for the best player available and instead looking for a better deal during the MLB trade deadline. Their outfield’s future would be secured, even though winning this season wouldn’t gain from it.
