Alabama Players Address Homelessness: Deontae Lawson and Ryan Williams spearhead a $7.8 million player investment to create a special refuge for Tuscaloosa’s elderly homeless population….

In one of the most impactful off-the-field moves in recent college football history, Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson and rising star Ryan Williams have come together to lead a $7.8 million player-driven investment aimed at tackling one of Tuscaloosa’s most pressing crises: elderly homelessness.

The initiative, named “The Crimson Refuge Project”, will fund the development of a long-term shelter and resource center specifically for senior citizens experiencing homelessness — a vulnerable population often overlooked in both policy and philanthropy.

Set to break ground later this year, the project will include:

45 private rooms with medical access and nutrition support

On-site kitchens, counselors, and career specialists

Faith-based services, mentorship programs, and family reconnection opportunities

Basic healthcare and mental wellness clinics

A community space named after the late Coach Nick Saban’s “process” philosophy

This isn’t just about shelter — it’s about restoring dignity, safety, and hope.

“These are people who built our communities, who worked hard their whole lives,” said Lawson.
“They deserve better than sleeping under bridges or in fear. We want to give them a second chance — with love, not judgment.”

Ryan Williams, the 5-star wide receiver and national sensation, echoed that this project is about using influence to spark change:

“We get the spotlight every Saturday — now it’s time to use it for something that lasts. Tuscaloosa gave us love; this is how we give it back.”

Both players are using NIL earnings, endorsements, and matching donations from teammates and alumni to fuel the initiative. Early reports indicate contributions from former Alabama greats, local businesses, and Coach Kalen DeBoer himself.

The Alabama football program has always stood for excellence on the gridiron, but this project shows its athletes are also embracing excellence in humanity.

“Championships come and go,” said one local pastor.
“But what these young men are doing? This is eternal work.”

At a time when headlines are often dominated by stats, contracts, and rankings, Deontae Lawson and Ryan Williams are reminding us what true leadership looks like. Through empathy, action, and purpose, they are setting a new standard — not just for Alabama football, but for the entire college sports world.
